Bryon James Boulton, MD, FACS

Dr. Boulton joined WakeMed Physician Practices - Carolina Cardiovascular Surgical Associates after completing his cardiothoracic surgical residency at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.  Certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Boulton also completed a surgical internship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and a general surgical residency at The University Hospital/University of Cincinnati - College of Medicine (COM) in Cincinnati, where he also served as the chief resident in general surgery.

Office Information

Dr. Boulton brings unique surgical expertise with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and off-pump coronary artery bypass to WakeMed. He also offers services in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, robotic cardiac surgery and hybrid revascularization, mitral valve repair, TEVAR, and aortic aneurysm repair. He offers the full complement of general thoracic services as well, which consist of thorascopic surgery of the lung, mediastinum, and pleura, including video-assisted thorascopic (VATS) lobectomies.  He also performs laparoscopic surgery to correct achalasia and GERD, and has experience with tracheal surgery.

An award-winning researcher, Dr. Boulton is the co-author of several articles and book chapters that have been published in medical publications such as the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, The Mont Reid Surgical Handbook and Medical Management of the Surgical Patient. He has also presented at multiple national conferences, and most recently, at the Society of Thoracic Surgery's 2012 National Conference, proctored a TAVR course for surgeons. Dr. Boulton earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati - COM and his bachelor's degree from Miami University of Ohio.  He is a current member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Dr. Boulton was honored by the Triangle Business Journal as a 2015 40 Under 40 award recipient for his expertise in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive surgical procedure that repairs damaged heart valves without having to do open surgery or stop the heart.
