A few decades ago, recovering from surgeries like gallbladder and hernias could take weeks. But in today's world of advanced technology and minimally invasive procedures, under the skilled hands of our experienced surgeons at WakeMed Physician Practices - General Surgery, many patients recover much more quickly.

Located at the state-of-the-art WakeMed North Healthplex facility in North Raleigh, our general surgery doctors offer comprehensive care for patients who need pancreas, esophagus, or breast surgery, or hernia repairs. They are equipped to treat melanoma, and benign and malignant diseases of the colon and thyroid. They also have extensive training in robotic-assisted surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgery, including for treatment of reflux.

Some of the more common types of surgery are when people have their gallbladder or appendix removed. Some colon and rectal diseases that general surgeons handle range from inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, to hemorrhoids, diverticulitis and gastrointestinal bleeding.

From day surgery to inpatient procedures, our Raleigh surgeons offer expertise in a variety of specialties, including:

What Are the Steps to Surgery?
Depending on your symptoms, and assuming the surgery is non-emergency in nature, you will begin your appointment with WakeMed Physician Practices - General Surgery by filling out patient information forms that provide background about yourself and your medical and surgical history, along with your family's health history and any medications you use. Women who are referred for breast examinations or follow-ups also will be asked to fill out a patient form, and to bring her own mammogram/ultrasound films to her appointment. You will need to contact the radiology facility where the films are located.

What Should I Do if I Need Surgery?
The most important steps for you to take are to become well informed about your disease or illness, and learn all you can about your operation and the specific surgical procedures that may be used. You also will want to know what to expect during the recovery period, how your pain can be managed, and what types of medication you might be prescribed afterward. Your general surgery doctors will be happy to answer any questions that you and your family have. Not all patients will need surgery, those who do can be confident that they will get the outstanding care they seek and the quick road to recovery that they want under the expertise care of North Carolina surgeons at WakeMed Physician Practices - General Surgery, using the most advanced technology available.
