    What is Vascular Surgery?
This specialty focuses on diseases of the vascular system, or arteries and veins. Treatment can include medication, minimally invasive catheter procedures, and surgery reconstruction. A vascular surgeon is trained in the diagnosis and management of all parts of the vascular system except the heart and brain.

    What is Endovascular Surgery?

Dr. Kirk Charles is highly skilled in the use of endovascular procedures, which is a minimally-invasive surgical technique that involves accessing numerous areas of the body through blood vessels, resulting in faster recover times and less scarring than conventional open surgical techniques.  Endovascular surgery can be used to repair aneurysms, place stents in arteries to keep them open and repair or treat a number of other vascular disorders.

What are some typical surgeries or treatments I can get?
At WakeMed Physician Practices - Vascular Surgery, you will benefit from Dr. Charles' expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of vascular diseases or problems. Some of those are:

    • Abdominal aortic aneurysm: Depending on the condition, he can make an open repair or endoluminal repair to fix an aneurysm, which is a bulge in an artery that can be caused by an accident, certain medical problems or genetic conditions. Aneurysms are dangerous because left untreated, they can burst, and the internal bleeding can be fatal.
    • Bypass surgery in the leg.
    • Dialysis fistulas and grafts.
    • Balloon angioplasty or stents to open arteries that may have narrowed due to cholesterol buildup, aging, infection, or some type of heart disease.
    • Treatment for varicose veins: Laser ablation, sclerotherapy and ambulatory phlebectomy.
    • Treatment for Peripheral Artery Disease.

Vascular disease is not only dangerous because it can lead to more serious problems, it's also uncomfortable and can restrict your ability to move freely. Dr. Charles knows that if you have pain in your legs or feet, or have poor circulation, you are not going to be able to do as much as you'd like. His mission is to work with you on a healthcare plan and course of treatment that allows you to live a more healthy and active lifestyle.
