What Is Primary Care?
The primary care physician is usually the first doctor patients turn to for care and is generally knowledgeable in all areas of medicine. Primary care doctors will help you identify a medical concern, and help you determine when a specialist is needed. Many patients develop a long-term relationship with their primary care physician. Physicians most often referred to as primary care doctors include family medicine doctors and internal medicine physicians.

What Is Internal Medicine?
Internal medicine is a medical specialty focused on adult medicine, provided by caregivers with specific training focusing on prevention and treatment of adult diseases. Internal medicine doctors, otherwise known as internists, are often called on to treat chronic illnesses. They also focus on disease prevention and wellness. Doctors of internal medicine often collaborate with other specialists such as surgeons or cardiologists to coordinate a patient's care and manage medical problems associated with that care.

What Is Family Medicine?
Family medicine is the medical specialty concerned with the total healthcare of the individual and the family. Family medicine doctors are known for creating caring relationships with patients and their families by taking care of physical, mental and emotional health. As necessary, family medicine doctors will refer patients to specialists or subspecialists and will help coordinate care for their patients.

What is Urgent Care?
Urgent care is a practice that provides immediate attention for patients who walk in without appointments. The care typically is for patients who need quick attention for an illness or injury that isn't serious enough for an emergency department visit. Urgent care centers are staffed by physicians, nurses and assistants who treat a wide range of illnesses and injuries and can perform minor procedures. Urgent care centers have some on-site diagnostic services available, such as labs and X-ray facilities.

What is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine?
When you visit an osteopathic physician, you can expect to receive excellent medical care that emphasizes the whole person, with an emphasis on connections between diseases and symptoms and the musculoskeletal system. Osteopaths are fully trained and licensed medical physicians, receiving a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) instead of a Doctor of Medicine (MD). Osteopathic physicians and surgeons provide comprehensive patient-focused health care, paying attention to the relationships of your body’s structure and function

What Services Does a Primary Care Doctor Provide?
Common services offered by primary care physicians include: adult health care, adolescent medicine, chronic disease management, women's health care, gynecology, sports medicine, dermatology, preventive medicine, urgent care, physical exams, minor procedures and vaccinations. Some offices feature additional diagnostic services such as on-site laboratory and/or x-ray services for the convenience of their patients.
