Karen Bash, MD

Dr. Karen Bash is highly skilled at helping women through all kinds of pregnancies, but is especially interested in the challenges of managing high-risk pregnancies, or those dealing with trauma. Her expertise and extensive training help her to sensitively shepherd women through these emotionally stressful months, whether they are at risk for reasons they inherit-for instance, if miscarriages run among women in their family-or if they accidentally fall or are in a car crash, or if they are, sadly, the victim of domestic violence.

Dr. Bash is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and within the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, she has earned diplomate status. Her clinical interests are high-risk obstetrics, adolescent gynecology, and gynecologic surgery.

Education and Training
She received her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA, and completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Bash is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She is also the Director of Student Education in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC), as well as the Chair of the . Dr. Bash has been the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at WakeMed, and also the Medical Director of Generations Family Health Plan in Chapel Hill, NC.  She also serves as the Chair for WakeMed's MSQI Committee.

Dr. Bash is a member of the American Medical Association, the North Carolina Medical Society, the Wake County Medical Society, and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She has published journal articles in the Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey, the American Journal of Perinatology, and the North Carolina Medical Journal.

High-Risk Obstetrics
While most expectant mothers go through pregnancy without complications, there are always some risks, whether internal (chronic conditions) or external (accidents or other trauma). Women who are pregnant with twins or triplets, or are over 35 years old, or have conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or cancer need special care and management while pregnant.

Dr. Bash is familiar with all of the complicating factors, and her expertise will instill confidence in you if you are facing or in the midst of a high-risk pregnancy. She understands that the care extends far beyond the important physical needs to include mental and emotional stresses. A good example is that women who are put on bed rest, either at home or in the hospital, face many challenges, including boredom, a sense of loss of control, and feeling like a burden to their families.

As part of Wake Specialty Physicians - Women's Center, Dr. Bash will be with you through all of your tough times, offering advice and outstanding prenatal care to help you deliver a happy, healthy baby.
