Common General Surgery Services
While our surgeons provide a wide variety of comprehensive surgical services and procedures, here are a few of the most common procedures performed at our general surgery practices.

What are general surgery doctors? The term "general surgery" sounds like it should be all-encompassing for any type of surgery, but general surgery doctors actually specialize in surgery related to the digestive tract. This includes the abdominal organs (intestines), and the esophagus, stomach, smal bowel, gallbladder, liver, pancreas and colon. They also will deal with diseases involving the skin, like skin cancer (melanoma), and the breasts, like breast cancer and breast reconstructive surgery. A very common job for a general surgeon is to be a hernia surgeon, or one who performs hernias surgery. To become a general surgeon, medical school graduates need to complete residencies that can last from five to seven years, depending on whether they wish to further specialize in areas like trauma surgery, breast surgery or endocrine surgery.

Do They Use Robotic Assisted Surgery? Yes, our highly trained, highly skilled team of general surgery doctors take advantage of the most advanced technology to ensure that your surgery is fast, effective and safe. By using cameras and very small instruments, assisted by computers and "robots," general surgeons routinely perform laparoscopic surgery, With incisions as small as 0.5 to 1 cm, patients recover much more quickly, lose less blood and have far smaller scars to show for it. Gallbladders, appendices, and colons can all be removed with this technique, and hernias are now repaired mostly by laparoscopic surgery. WakeMed's Raleigh Campus is the only hospital in the Triangle area to own and operate the newest upgrade to this advanced surgical robot, which can be used for gallbladder and other surgeries. With so many excellent surgeons at hand, you will find a quick path to recovery for all of your general surgery needs in the Raleigh, NC area.
